Team Spotlight: Coconut Waste to Clean Cooking – Meet EcoCoco from Madagascar

In Madagascar, the scent of traditional cooking often comes with a cost: smoke-filled homes, deforestation, and rising fuel expenses. But what if the solution to cleaner, healthier cooking had been discarded all along?

Meet EcoCoco, one of the pioneering teams in this year’s InnovImpact Incubator, and a featured presenter at our Demo Day on July 12, 2025.

Turning Waste into Worth

EcoCoco transforms discarded coconut shells into high-quality, eco-friendly briquettes. Their solution is deceptively simple but powerfully effective: by repurposing agricultural waste, they address a tangled web of challenges: climate change, public health, energy access, and poverty.

But EcoCoco isn’t just providing better fuel – they’re building a movement rooted in circular economy principles and community empowerment.

“Our users have happily told us that the EcoCoco briquettes burn better and produce less smoke.”

A Community-First Approach

Led by a dedicated team – Ratsitoarison Rakotondrasoa Nirina Ambinintsoa, Rapanoelina Fandresena Mamisoa, Razafindrabe Narindra Jean Philippe, Rabeso Ary Fenitra, Razanamparany Mirasoa, and Ramasindraibe Ando – EcoCoco believes the people behind the product matter just as much as the product itself.

They don’t just collect materials from communities. They grow with communities.

  • 🛠️ Local job creation
  • 📚 Training and skills development
  • 🌱 Economic value that stays in the region

“We collect raw materials together with communities. We provide training and skill-building opportunities to families. Communities grow with us – not just work for us.”

Real Change, One Briquette at a Time

EcoCoco’s impact stretches far beyond Madagascar’s borders. As demand for sustainable energy solutions grows worldwide, EcoCoco offers a model that’s not only replicable – but also deeply rooted in local resilience and global relevance.
